“No way.
Calista refused right after he offered. She was so agitated that her voice unintentionally rose several decibels. Lucian pressed on his slightly sore ears and stood up straight.
“I’m asking you to move in with me so it’s easier to protect you. Although the Jacquez family’s influence isn’t that strong in Capeton, it’s a piece of cake for them if they want to do something to you.”

He just said it bluntly like that regarding something that had to do with a man’s ego. He didn’t show a
single trace of self–consciousness or embarrassment.
Calista was unsure whether she should praise him for his bravery or how thick–skinned he was.
“I think my apartment is completely fine,‘ she retorted.
“Do you think your apartment is safe when Zachary could just get any random thugs to abduct you at your
doorstep?”
Calista was at a loss for words.
“It’s just temporary. Once this matter is resolved, you can move back anytime,” said Lucian convincingly as he continued, “You surely don’t want to endanger yourself before finding your mom’s murderer. Or do you expect me to avenge you and wipe them all out? Well, you can only ask me to do this if you’re Mrs.
Northwood. Given our current state…”
He kept his mouth shut and refrained from continuing with ‘which is a complicated relationship‘. He had a hunch that she would leave right away after she heard this.
So he continued instead, “It’s the right timing for you to save up as well and buy a house. You can’t keep on renting places, right? Paul will eventually get married and given your identity, if his wife finds out about
you, it’ll scar their relationship.”
Calista understood what he meant. Initially, she moved to Paul’s because she didn’t have a place to rent.
After that, she was too busy and she had already paid one year’s rent, that’s why she didn’t move out in haste. She had been looking out for houses. She’s planning to move out soon.
Lucian’s gaze had been fixated on her face. It was easy for him to see through the struggle and faltering
“If you don’t want to live at Everglade Manor, we can go somewhere else.”
Calista was almost convinced. She had to make sure she was alive if she had to find the culprit behind
her mother’s death.
She could hire an army of security which were able to fight with the Jacquez family, but she couldn’t
afford it.
But she also didn’t want to owe Lucian anything. She had already had enough when she used to owe him
such a large sum of money.
It would be even harder for her to pay back to him if personal feelings were involved. Lucian could see
through her mind.
Keeping his composure, he said calmly, “In return, you’ll have to cook for me every day. My stomach hasn’t been doing well lately, and the doctor told me to refrain from oily, spicy, and cold food. The bodyguards are on a fixed salary, not commission–based. So protecting one person or two people costs.
the same, so it won’t result in any additional expenses for me.”
Calista hesitated for a while.
“I’ll consider it first.”
It was such a sudden situation and she needed time to weigh the pros and cons carefully. Lucian didn’t
pursue any further either.
“Sure.”
It didn’t take long for Calista to come to her decision. She decided to move to Everglade Manor the next day because she sensed that someone was stalking her last night after Lucian sent her back.
When she turned around, nothing seemed off. She didn’t know whether she was overthinking or she was being stalked, but she still decided to move to Everglade Manor temporarily.
She no longer moved back as the mistress of the house, so she didn’t despise the place as much as she
used to.
Lucian was in the kitchen. His sleeves were casually rolled up to his elbows, revealing a small section of
his well–built arms. He was focused on chopping vegetables and he seemed even more skilled than her.
His bustling figure, swirling white smoke, the low hum of the exhaust fan, and the clinking of pots and
pans combined to create a picturesque scene of peaceful times.
Although Calista knew he could cook, seeing him in action gave her a surreal feeling.
Without tuming his head, he said, “Go upstairs and take a shower. The food will be ready in half an hour.”
“Didn’t you say I have to cook?”
Lucian turned around and looked at her serious face. He couldn’t help but chuckle softly.
*Just consider today your welcome party. You’ll have to cook tomorrow. There will be chances, don’t be
hasty.”
Calista was at a loss for words. Why did he have to make this normal conversation sound so sensual?
She glared at him and went upstairs with her luggage. She chose a guest room that was the furthest from the master bedroom. She got changed after a shower, then she started to make the bed.
The cleaner came to the mansion to tidy up every day. It was spotlessly clean on every corner, and the
bed was already ready for use after it was made.
She came down right after 30 minutes when Lucian just placed the last dish on the table.
He raised his eyebrows when he saw her descending from the stairs, “Did you install a tracker on me? You came down right on time.”
“I’m not as twisted as you.”
“In what way am I twisted?”
Lucian looked at her with an amused expression. Calista was genuinely annoyed by his way of talking. It seemed like he was constantly trying to undress her with his eyes.
“Put away those perverted thoughts in your mind. Stop looking at me like a pervert.”
“If you’re not a pervert, why would you regard me as a pervert? Calista, you need to clear your perverted thoughts. Not all men think with their penises and think of nothing but having sex when they see a woman.
Calista sneered at him.
Do you want to have a drink? Lucian asked as he went over to the wine cabinet.
“No,” replied Calista and she continued, “you’re not allowed to drink as well.”
If he did anything to her when he was drunk and attempted to try out what the doctor suggested to him
on her, no one would come to her rescue despite her screams for help and struggles.
What’s it to you if I drink? Lucian chuckled playfully.
Then go ahead then.”
Nevertheless, he closed the wine cabinet and went back to the dining table.
He made a full–course meal. Initially, Calista didn’t have high hopes for his cooking. After all, it was already very outstanding for him to cook food thoroughly as someone born with a silver spoon.
She took a bite and to her surprise, it tasted extremely good. And it had a refreshing, spicy kick that was
quite appetizing
The consequence she had to bear when the food was that appetizing as she ate more than her usual portion. And she ended up being too full. Lucian put the plates into the dishwasher.
As he glanced at Calista, who was pacing in the living room to speed up her food digestion process,
asked casually, “Callie, do you wanna exercise for a bit?”
