Chapter 298 The Man in Heat
The blank space in Calista’s mind was filled with certain imagery. It left her so exasperated she couldn’t speak. Meanwhile, on the other end of the line, Lucian also kept silent.
The atmosphere grew more ambiguous with the sound of their joined breaths. She could also make out
his calm breathing picking up and growing heavier, it was sultry. Veins bulged on her forehead.
Restrain yourself, Lucian This is a phone call. Where is your mind wandering off to?”
The man’s voice had turned husky
Tve been holding back for too long I can’t hold back
Calista hung up the phone before he could finish. That scumbag had his head filled with indecent
thoughts. If she allowed him to continue, what other vulgar words would he utter?
She tossed her phone aside and tried to go back to sleep. But the moment her eyes fluttered shut, she
found that Lucian’s antics had all but gotten rid of her drowsiness
She switched on the lights and scrolled through her social media. She somehow ended up on Liam’s
profile
The last message was her inquiry about Vivian. Liam never answered. There were no recent updates from
him either. She wondered if he had blocked her.
But Calista didn’t bother to send him another text to verify her suspicions. Liam wasn’t someone she hired. His protection might be under another person’s orders.
She wasn’t so thick–skinned as to cling to someone because they lent her a hand a few times. The matter
with Liam had Calista recalling a separate case.
The beaded bracelet she snatched from the mysterious person in the car back at Apthon.
Calista opened the bedside drawer and retrieved a small rosewood bead. She held it between her fingers
and examined it under the light.
The purplish black bead was inscribed with the word “God” in the middle, embellished with gold dust.
Although small, the letters were clear and sharp.
The severe lettering struck her. It was evident that the person who engraved the letters was highly skilled.

She could bring the beads to a store to inquire and identify possible buyers through the inscribed letters. But, she still wouldn’t be able to pinpoint who it could be.
There was no way of telling what buyers did with them once they were bought. Calista unconsciously ran her fingers across the letters. That was unless the engraved word was unique.
She stuffed the rosewood bead into her bag.
The next day, the moment Calista got to the museum, she noticed Thomas hurrying out of the restroom. It seemed he had been caught up in something.
Everything about him seemed off. The muscles in his cheeks were twitching uncontrollably. She stopped
when she saw him
Thomas had never liked how she was promoted to Class A Back then, he mostly felt disgruntled.
But, with the restoration of the tiara and Augustus explicitly stating that she was the one their superiors appointed, his dissatisfaction turned to resentment.
Calista didn’t want to start her day upset. So, she planned to wait until he left before continuing. However, Thomas charged right at her. She tried to move aside but wasn’t fast enough.
He was too fast, like a firecracker. They collided, causing the pair to fall to the floor.
His gaze
landed on her. He stared at her for a short moment before shooting her an emotionally charged smirk. Then, without saying a word, he got up and left.
Calista was at a loss for words. What was wrong with him? Caught up in the brief distraction, she didn’t get up until someone nearby came to help her up.
“Did Thomas get possessed or something? That was such a creepy smile.”
Calista shook her head. There was a burning pain in her elbow. She lifted it and saw that she had
accidentally scrapped it against the wall when she fell. It tore off a layer of skin.
After Lucian woke her up early in the morning, she hadn’t managed to get more sleep. Encountering such
an upsetting situation in the wee hours of the morning left her irritated.
Just as she reached her workstation, she received a voice message from David before she could even
set down her bag.
Mr. Northwood is ill, Madam.”
Calista thought about the remarks that Lucian said to her in the early hours of the morning. That man was aroused. Anyone within proximity of him would be able to sniff him out.
She only typed at work.
“Feed him some anti–horny drugs if he’s in heat.”
Back at the Everglade Manor, David was sweating profusely when faced with his employer’s dark glare. He carefully handed the phone to Lucian.
“Madam Calista seems to have misunderstood something, Mr. Northwood.”
Lucian smiled at him, one that sent chills down David’s spine.
“How good are you at communicating in Komisch?”
“I’m… not certified,” David answered.
There was no strict need for Komisch proficiency in his major.
“Register for the Komisch proficiency exam tomorrow. Don’t bother coming to work if you don’t achieve the highest grades possible.”
David was rendered speechless. He wasn’t a broadcast host. Why would he need to be so proficient in the language? However, he couldn’t voice his thoughts. He was afraid of how Lucian would react.
Lucian had been divorced for a considerable amount of time. There was not a single companion by his
side, be it a long–term or a short–term one.
A man with unsatisfied desires was the most terrifying. They were prone to be both physically and
mentally impaired.
Lucian was completely unaware of David’s thoughts. Seeing that he didn’t speak, Lucian looked up and
pinched his brows.
“Repeat yourself to her again. This time, don’t send a voice message. Use text.”
David could feel his resentment mounting.
“Mr. Northwood caught a cold, Madam
Calista replied, “Go see a doctor then. Why are you telling me this? Do you think I can cure him? Or do you
need me to collect his cxxxse?”
David stared at the blatant attempt at censoring the word. She likely wanted to talk about collecting Lucian’s corpse But, being a superstitious person, she replaced the letters instead.
Not that it mattered Despite it being May, David shivered from the cold.
“Madam may not be in a good mood. She’s usually standoffish but she’s much more tactful with her
words.”
Lucian’s tightly furrowed brows relaxed slightly at that. The cold atmosphere seemed to dissipate.
“Go find out what’s bothering her.”
Back at the museum, Calista tossed her phone aside after sending the text. She immersed herself in the day’s work. Augustus walked in.
“I received a sudden notice that the higher–ups will be here for an inspection. They’ll be here soon. Please make the necessary preparations. Just do what you need to do. There’s no need to be nervous.”
It was just the usual monthly report. It was a procedural affair. Everyone working here was an experienced veteran. What could go wrong with inanimate objects?
Half an hour later, the head in charge of the inspection arrived. Augustus personally welcomed them. A group of people in suits entered the museum.
The first item they inspected was the object that was currently of top priority–the tiara that was being
restored.
“We attach great importance to this tiara. It’s a treasure that belongs to this nation. We must ensure that it returns to our possession. Fortunately, Ms. Teresa has verbally agreed to donate it to our museum, regardless of whether it can be restored or not.”
There was a sudden change in his tone.
“Despite that, we still need to remain attentive. Our colleagues overseas have their eyes on us. They believe we won’t succeed. Everyone present here is among the best in the field. We can’t have them
underestimate us.”
Just as he finished speaking. Thomas knocked on the door and entered. He was throwing Calista a look of sorrow and tension. But his eyes betrayed his delight. It was impossible to conceal.
“Something’s wrong, Mr. Beaumont.”
