Chapter 229 Accepting His Advances
Selena turned to stare at Liana, the former’s voice and expression were as cold as ice.
“Who did you just call a common whore?”
Liana was startled by her reaction
*Selena…”
Selena couldn’t be bothered to give the woman her time of day. She called for her brother instead. There was no mercy as she said her piece right in front of the members of the Jenkin family.
“You should teach your wife to keep her mouth shut. We may not be a flourishing family but we have our standards. This is a family dinner. Everyone here is a Jenkin. But, what if someone overheard a woman of the Jenkin family calling someone a common whore? You would be bringing shame to the entire family.”
Liana was close to tears. She didn’t think Selena, who had never put on airs despite having married into
the affluent Northwood family, to be so sharp–tongued.
If it weren’t for the Northwood family, who the hell would grovel at her feet just to please her?
Once her niece had Lucian at her every beck and call, Liana would be the one with the bragging rights
instead of the old hag.
As the thoughts ran through her mind, she looked up to see her husband staring coldly at her. That had
her stopping with her schemes.
Selena couldn’t be bothered with the woman. She immediately gave Calista a call.
“I’m at the Notre Garden right now, Calista. I had a few drinks. Could you drop by to give me a lift? I gave
the driver a day off because we’re having a family feast.”
“Where’s Lucian?”
Her expression darkened.
“I don’t want to hear about that stupid brat. Just seeing him is annoying me.”
“Alright.”
“I’ll be waiting. Drive slow. There’s no need to hurry.”
As soon as she hung up, she called Lucian.
“I’ve made plans to have dinner with Calista and her boyfriend tonight. Do you have any luxury goods in

“She doesn’t have a boyfriend. Please don’t make things up,” Lucian said.
“It’s been announced to the press. What do you mean by “she doesn’t have a boyfriend“? Hurry up. Stop
acting like a miser.”
The man frowned in annoyance.
“It’s all lies.”
“How would you know? Do you think she has to report her love life to her ex–husband? Is she also required to send you a copy of her ultrasound scans and blood test results when she gets pregnant one day? I’m at Notre Garden, Calista will be here to give me a lift. Hurry up and have David send a gift over. Customizing luxury items takes time. Your second–hand goods are irrelevant otherwise?”
Lucian had a sneaking suspicion that Selena was trying to make indirect jabs at him
But, he’d rather die than offer Hector a gift. The man would be parading around as Calista’s boyfriend.
Lucian was already doing the man a favor by not kicking him.
He drove straight to Notre Garden. If he allowed his mother and Hector to enjoy a meal together, he’d
probably be Calista’s fiance by the time they were done. Lucian and Calista arrived at the same time.
She frowned at
man who alighted from the car.
“Since you’re here, you can give Mrs. Selena a lift.”
Having said that, she turned and left for the parking lot. Lucian noticed how she was avoiding him as if he
were a vicious viper.
This, and the thought of her smile as she hung onto Hector in the press release this morning, ignited an uncontrollable rage in him. He clenched his teeth and stood there with a cold expression.
If she wanted to leave, she could. He wasn’t interested. Calista was about to get in her car when a hand reached out from behind her to slam the door shut.
“Why leave the moment you see me? Will it kill you to look at me for a moment longer? Or do you prefer men like Hector now? Is that why you can’t stand me?”
The man suddenly lost his temper for no reason. It was almost childish and irrational.
She looked down and stared at the hand caging her wrist in a painfully tight grip. Then, she met his dark and cold gaze tinged by stubbornness.
“Are you trying to court me Lucian?

Why else would they keep running into each other in a city as vast as Capeton? There would always be an exchange every time they met.
Lucian’s lips were pinched tightly shut. He wanted to tell her that she was free to believe whatever she wanted to believe. But he recalled Cade’s sarcastic remark.
“How are you this wishy washy when wooing a woman? You might as well be a woman and have Calista
court you instead”
The thought made him change his response
“Yes”
Calista smiled at him. Lucian was captivated by her smile. She had always been extraordinarily beautiful; blessed with fair skin, stunning looks and long legs.
When she smiled, it wasn’t an exaggeration to say her beauty was enough to bring a country to its knees. Did her smile mean that she was agreeing to a reconciliation?
He tightened her grip around her arm and pulled her into his arms.
“Let’s get..”
He wanted them to get remarried.
“I apologize. But, no,” Calista cut him off. “Do you regret it? Was this brought on by Lily’s antics? Or have
you just lost your mind? My answer is no.”
Lucian stared at her as the smile that tugged at her lips faded. There was no hiding the thunderous gloom
on his face.
“What are you saying?”
She wasn’t so foolish to think he hadn’t heard her loud and clear. It was as if he were trying to make her repeat herself.
“Our marriage was a forced marriage of convenience. I also afforded you the respect you deserve as my husband. I was lost and frustrated when we got divorced. But I never once regretted that decision. And, I still don’t.”
Calista’s gaze was calm. She had spoken with such conviction that Lucian couldn’t delude himself into thinking that she was acting out of anger.

She tried to tug her hand out of his grip. But, he held on so tightly that it was causing her pain. She frowned and struggled harder.
“Let go.”
Lucian suddenly smiled. He loosened his grip but didn’t let go.
“I’ve been around you frequently enough. Why are you suddenly so resolutely rejecting my advances?
Were you touched by Hector’s actions this morning? Are you accepting his courtship?”
