Chapter 258 How Much for the Night
As Calista got up, Paul followed her up as well.
“I’ll see you off.”
“There’s no need for that, Mr. Baker. You can carry on drinking with them. It’s just downstairs, so you don’t
have to see me off.”
Earlier, when Shawn asked Paul whether it was okay for her to drink, it was an attempt to categorize her
as Paul’s partner.
Though she knew she might be overthinking it, it was still better to avoid any potential misunderstandings.
Since it’s impossible, she should make herself clear. It’s better to not give mixed signals as in rejecting verbally but acting the opposite.
This created a false impression that she could be won over with just some more effort.
Sometimes, having feelings for another person was self–hypnotizing in a certain way.
Due to one’s indecisiveness which in turn gave the other party the wrong signals, leading them deeper
into self–hypnotization.
It was the same concept as fishing. If you fed the fish too much, they wouldn’t take the bait. But, you couldn’t not feed them anything either, since you had to lure them to the bait with food.
The best balance was to feed them just enough that they would be eager the next time you threw in the bait. Then, it would be too easy to reel them in like that.
She briefly thought up this concept and marveled at how well she managed to put this situation into
words.
Unfortunately, she didn’t even manage to experience a legitimate and certified romantic relationship.
Instead, she quit in a mess.
Calista was firm with her words. She was also only slightly tipsy, and her safety could be assured with
surveillance cameras everywhere.
Hence Paul respected her decision and retreated to his position as her superior.
Okay Tum on the video call then. You can hang up when you’re in your room.
He smiled in self–deprecation. He wasn’t any gentleman. He had his desires as a male too when he faced
Callsta
Paul backed down because he knew he had to. He knew Calista didn’t want others to misunderstand and she didn’t want to let him have the wrong idea either.
Calista’s lips twitched and her refusal was on the tip of her tongue.
But Paul interrupted her and said firmly, “It’s nothing. I’m not going to say anything. I just wanna make sure you return to your room safely. If you don’t allow this, then I’m going to have to send you off myself.”
“… Thanks.”
It would be ungrateful of her if she refused any further. Plus, she was quite moved when he was genuinely
concerned about her safety.
Lucian, who wasn’t far away, saw everything. Although he didn’t exactly know what they said, he could already guess from their subsequent actions.
He said, “Are women generally a bit foolish?”
The woman, who was already prepared to turn around and leave, was puzzled. She was positive that she
didn’t have any chances.
“If you don’t agree then so be it. Why are you insulting me?” she thought.
Lucian downed his drink.
“Is there any difference between his method and asking people to just drink hot water when they’re having a fever? Does video calling let her teleport back to her place or does it let the bad guy give up his evil intentions? The most it can do is just to provide a more detailed description of the assault when reporting to the police, for the sake of apprehension. But who will allow you to be on your video call when you’re getting assaulted? Don’t they smash your phone first?”
“What is he talking about?” The woman thought.
“He’s only doing it for show. There’s no damn use at all. How can she be moved like this? If this isn’t
foolishness, what is?”
The woman tried to reply as she tried her best to analyze what Lucian meant.
She understood it as the woman mentioned by him was a lovesick fool who suffered for umpteen years
but was easily won over with a few honeyed words.
So she replied, “Maybe she’s also a cheap woman.”
Lucian narrowed his eyes and glared at her coldly.
“What did you say?”
Although he was asking her, his look clearly said that he’d make her regret it if she dared to repeat what
she just said.
“I said, you and that girl make a perfect match. You’ll stay happily ever after.”
“Both are such romantics–how can they not be a match made in heaven?” she thought.
After she said so, she left swiftly. Although Lucian said Calista was foolish, he still followed her after she left the bar. He strode briskly and caught up to her in just a few stops.
He snorted as he saw the phone in Calista’s hand. She was still on the video call. His snort was quite
loud. Not only did Calista hear it, but Paul did as well on the other end of the call.
Both elevators were on the ground floor, so it would take a while for them to arrive. Neither of them said anything. Paul also remained silent on the phone. Palpable tension hung in the air.
As they waited, someone came out of the bar. It was Kyle, who was single, and drunk. His eyes glimmered as his gaze fell upon Calista. She was so much prettier than those prostitutes earlier on.
Kyle’s gaze swept across her and Lucian. Seeing that they both stared forward numbly, which was obvious that they were strangers, he was excited.
He thought Calista’s unlikely to be a proper woman since she was alone at this bar at this hour. Judging by her plain attire, she’s probably here to lure in other men.
Although Kyle wasn’t born with a silver spoon, he had a decent income. With her looks, she should suffice
as his sugar baby for a year or so.
So as soon as the lift opened, he pressed himself against Calista.
“Miss, how much for the night?”
Kyle’s hand reached out to touch Calista’s waist in a lewd way. But before he could do so, the seemingly harmless Calista in front of him turned and delivered a slap.
The slap was fierce and sharp, and there wasn’t a trace of hesitation. The force of it felt like it had taken a
good chunk of his soul. How was she harmless? She’s a tigress!
Before Kyle could regain his senses from the blow, a leg came flying from his side. The speed was so fast
that all he saw was a black blur.
His waist was heavily kicked and he was flung away. With momentum, his body was thrown out and
crashed into the elevator wall. The whole elevator shook violently.
“Ouch, my back!”
Kyle howled in pain as his hand flew to the spot where he was kicked. He was wriggling like a fish on a chopping board, about to be slaughtered.
Lucian walked over and looked at him in disdain. Lucian’s gorgeous features were cast in deep shadows únder the light. Three buttons of his shirt were unbuttoned, revealing his well–defined chest muscles.
Bound by the shirt, his exuberant aura seemed strong and restrained. Thanks to his half–revealed neckline, an indescribable kind of sexiness emanated from him.
Lucian lowered his head. His gaze was fixated on the part below Kyle’s belt…
