Chapter 2 My Fiancée
When Tristan was alive, he was influential in Ampleshire. He was unpredictable, ruthless, and tyrannical, being the terror of all people. After his death, he still looked murderous in his portrait.
But he was good-looking. One could see his sharp features even from his portrait. His cold and emotionless eyes made people dare not look at him, so very few people noticed a small mole below the corner of his left eye.
Frightened by the look in Tristan’s eyes, Renee lowered her head. Hyman said, “Mrs. Duran, I have something else to do, so I’ll take my leave.”
Renee nodded.
Hyman then left quickly. Renee remained kneeling in place. Everyone who came to offer comfort would take a glance at Renee, either indifferently or curiously. It wasn’t until late at night that the mourning hall quieted down, and the servants had gone to sleep in their rooms.
Renee was left alone in the mourning hall. Tristan’s coffin was less than three meters away.
Renee didn’t have any food or water the whole day, and her knees were sore from kneeling. After confirming that there was no one around, she stood up and gently pounded her knees.
It was already June, but Renee still felt a bit cold in a thin dress. The wind brought a faint floral fragrance. Renee touched her stomach.
She was starving.
Renee’s eyes were glued to the fruits and pastries on the table. After hesitating for a while, she walked over, bowed with her hands clasped together, and said softly, “I’m hungry. Please lend me an apple. I’ll pay you back later.”
She reached out. When she was about to touch the apple, her wrist was grasped by a big hand with distinct joints.
Renee was startled, with goosebumps on her back. She hurriedly said, “I’m sorry. I’m starving. I…”
She thought she was caught by a servant of the Duran family, but after she apologized, she heard a casual but pleasant voice say, “Did you get my permission to steal my apple?”
Renee was stunned.
Those things were for Tristan. Why did this person say that?
Renee stiffened and raised her head little by little, only to see a tall man.
The man wore a black shirt and had wide shoulders, a narrow waist, and a faint smell of blood. His face was handsome and sharp, and there was a small yet inexplicably sexy mole under the corner of his left eye.
Renee widened her eyes and said, “You’re…”
Tristan arched an eyebrow and glanced at the petite girl in a rustic dress. Her long hair flopped over her face, making it difficult for Tristan to see her clearly. Such an ordinary girl would easily get lost in the crowd.
“Are you my…” Tristan paused and continued, “fiancée?”
Renee burst into tears and sobbed, “I’m hungry. Boohoo… Why are you so stingy? I just want to eat an apple, but you turn into a ghost and scare me…”
Renee’s cry was so loud. “Tsk.” Tristan covered Renee’s mouth with one hand and put the other around her waist. Then he lifted Renee onto the coffin effortlessly and said in a deep voice, “Stop crying, or I’ll break your legs.”
Renee nodded with tears in her eyes.
Tristan loosened his grip and asked, “How old are you? Can’t you tell whether I’m alive or dead?”
