Chapter 70
The crowd dispersed quickly, and now only Melville and Bates family were
left in the study.
It scared Ophelia to death when hearing that Celeste had called the cops.
This time she was genuinely crying. “D… dad, I was w… wrong. I dare not… not.
do it again.”
Caden was exasperated with his daughter’s deed, “you really stole them?”
Before receiving more wrath from his father, Ophelia fainted completely.
Ophelia’s mother wiped her tear, “kids make mistakes. It’s not a thing if
they correct it in time. Don’t bee too harsh, Caden. Besides, what can’t we
afford? There’s no need for our daughter to… steal.”
She glanced at Kendric, “Ken, considering the years of friendship between
our families, please, Ophelia…”
But Kendric’s mind was elsewhere. He was thinking about Gavin.
Gavin slapped Celeste, but everyone acted as if it was a common.
occurrence. No one offered even a scolding, as if it was no big deal at all.
Only Kendric felt heartbroken.
He had just realized that everything he had given to Celeste over the years
had been utterly useless to her, and had even brought her trouble.
He had given her valuable jewelry, but truth was she didn’t like them.
He bound her to his side by announcing her as his fiancée, but the title had
only brought her scorn and ridicule.

Kendric gradually grasped the reason for Celeste’s desires. She yearned to
escape from here, to assume a new identity, and to embrace a brand new life–a
life without him.
“Gavin Bates,” he spoke with a grave tone, as if he had just made a
momentous decision.
“Yes, Ken?”
“You are such my good friend.”
Gavin slightly shuddered, “Ken, I…”
Kendric closed his eyes, “from today on, Melville Group will terminate all
cooperation with your family.”
This statement nearly made Caden jump out of his chair, “Kendric, how
could you… over something so trivial…”
Most of Bates‘ businesses were deeply intertwined with Melville’s, making
them almost inseparable.
Now Gavin finally realized how seriously he fucked up the situation.
“Ken, you can’t cut ties with us just because of a woman…
“She’s not just any woman. She’s my wife.”
Kendric’s behavior was far beyond Gavin’s comprehension. From the
depths of his heart, he looked down on Celeste Alinsky, due to her rural
background. As for Kendric, he’s been a shining model in Gavin’s heart, the most excellent one in his peers. A woman lack of a prestigious family
background, Gavin thought, didn’t deserve Kendric.

Caden
gave Gavin a hard kick, “now look what you’ve done!”
Gavin was eaten up by regrets, Ken, I go apologize to Celeste! I’ll show her
respect from now on.”
Kendric looked into his eyes, “Gavin, you still don’t get it. We grew up
to your c
together, and when I entrusted Celeste it was all about trust. But
you… you let me down. And I believe people gotta face the consequences of their
actions.”
Gavin clung to his last stray of hope, “Ken, I can make it up.
Kendric got up from his seat, “something is tolerable, but not this. Let the
cops deal with Ophelia. Her physical illness can be treated, but immorality… you.
better stay out of it.”
After Kendric left, most of the guests scattered.
As Kendric got into his car, the Rolls–Royce parked next rolled down its window, and Ezra Winters raised an eyebrow, not bothering to hide his
mockery.
“Kendric, you’re quite a dickhead!”
Kendric remained poker–faced and ordered the driver to start the car.
It was halfway to their destination when Celeste realized they were off
course.
“This isn’t the way to my studio.

Luke glanced at the rear–view mirror, “Mr. Melville instructed to take you

to Sierra Villa.”
Sierra villa was on the outskirts of the city. It’s not quite convenient for
daily commute, so Celeste didn’t frequent it.
“Why are we going there?”
“I’m sorry, I have no clue, either. Mr. Melville only told me to send you
there.‘
Luke looked at her cautiously, “Miss Alinsky, actually….
“Actually what?”
“Mr. Melville… he wanna provide you with a better living condition, so he
asked me to take you to Sierra villa.”
Celeste kept a nonchalant expression, “I see.”
Luke hesitated, “Mr. Melville, actually… he cares a lot about your feelings.”
Celeste rubbed her forehead, “please be quiet!”
Luke complied and stayed as quiet as a mouse.

The police arrived in no time.
Besides Ophelia, they also took Madelyn in for questioning.
Gavin stood at the door. His deep sadness transformed into a twisted hatred directed at Celeste.
He’d never faced this level of humiliation and frustration before. This is
Gavin Bates who would never reflect on himself.
Redeemed From Caged Love
Naturally, he dumped the blame on Celeste, whom he had once looked down.
upon but who had ultimately altered the destiny of whole Bates family.
Mrs. Bates was present when the police gathered evidence in Ophelia room.
When the police took the set of rubies necklace from Ophelia’s drawer, Mrs.
Bates couldn’t hide her astonishment.
She couldn’t take her eyes off this set of rubies for it shone more than any
precious jewelry and valuable accessories she had ever seen. She glanced at the
teary–eyed Ophelia beside her and sighed.
“Ophelia, you shouldn’t have craved for what isn’t meant for you.”
Ophelia remained silent, lost in thought as she gazed at the ruby necklace.
No one could comprehend the emotions coursing through her when she saw it
for the first time.
Envy, desire, jealousy–none of these words quite captured it.
Ultimately, it all boiled down to bitterness. In terms of family background, lineage, and looks, she surpassed Celeste. If it weren’t for her… If it weren’t for her…
Given the generations of friendship between Bates and Melville families, these things were supposed to belong to her.
She slumped into Mrs. Bates‘ embrace, “mom, where am I less than her? Why does everything seem to revolve around Celeste? It’s not fair!”
Mrs. Bates sighed. She suddenly remembered Celeste’s words. She took a ruby ring and scrutinized it closely, but she couldn’t find any ring engraving on it.
She broke out in a cold sweat.

Celeste was lying.
But she didn’t need anyone else to believe in her. She only needed Kendric’s
trust.
“Caden… there are no engraving on it at all.”
Caden staggered a few steps and barely managed to keep his balance.
“Perhaps, this is… fate…”
