Chapter 62
Since their last unpleasant parting, the fragile calm they’d maintained.
between them had been shredded.
After that, neither of them had reached out, almost like they’d chosen to
completely forget each other.
Celeste, just like in the past few days, still refused to return to Melville
family.
She spent her days in her studio, drawing, and when fatigue set in, she’d lay
out a cot and grab a quick nap.
Celeste found the current situation quite satisfying. Without Kendric’s
constant calls and over–the–top attention to her, even the air she breathed felt
fresher.
But, the peaceful life didn’t last long before she got an unexpected phone
call from Melville family.
The phone relentlessly buzzed on the table. She shifted her gaze from her
sketch, checked the caller ID on her phone, and then promptly hung up and
tossed the phone aside without hesitation.
The phone rang again, like an annoying fly that just wouldn’t go away.
This time it was Cade. Celeste thought he might have something important about her father to report, so she answered the call.
Cade’s voice didn’t sound very composed.
“Miss Alinsky, do you have time right now?”
“Yeah, what’s going on?”

Cade asked carefully, “could you please come visit Mr. Melville?”
After a brief pause, she replied, “I’m busy now.”
“Mr. Melville has been sick for over a week!”
Celeste found it somewhat ridiculous. She put down her laptop, picked up the phone, and said, “if he’s sick, take him to the hospital. I’m not a doctor!“.

“The situation is more you think. Can you come and see Mr. Melville?”
“Cade, do I need to remind you? I don’t like Kendric now, and I have no obligation to do anything for him, so, please don’t call me again,” she frowned, ready to hang up the phone.
out?”
“Miss Alinsky!” Cade suddenly raised his voice. “Could you please hear me
“…fine, go ahead.”
Cade’s tone softened a bit, at least not sounding like he was trying to pressure or coerce her, “among the gifts Mr. Melville sent you, there’s a masterpiece of Diriny.”
Celeste couldn’t help but shift her gaze to the corner of her office, where gifts from Kendric were stacked. There were over a dozen items, but she hadn’t even unwrapped a single one.
“You know how hard it is to get Diriny’s paintings now. On the day before returning, Mr. Melville first attended a conference in France. After it ended, he flew directly to Iceland to participate in the auction.”
“After getting the painting, he didn’t rest for a moment. He flew back

overnight from Iceland, without a wink of sleep for a day and a night.”
Cade paused. “Upon landing, he brought the painting to you… at that time,
he was running a high fever.”
“So what?” Celeste interrupted him.
“Is it because of me, he got sick? Or is it because of me, he bought this painting?” It seemed like she heard a colossal joke. “Cade, you overestimate me too much.”
Cade sighed, “Miss Alinsky, it’s not that I’m overestimating you. It’s that you’ve never quite known it.”
Celeste sneered, “known what?”
“You’ve never known your place in Mr. Melville’s heart.”
Celeste burst into laughter, “place? What place do I hold in his heart? If that’s the case, how could you and Mary dare disrespect me? How could Madelyn dare cause me endless troubles? And how could he give me cold shoulders for all these years?!”
“…that’s not what I meant,” Cade muttered.
Celeste got fury, “he fell ill, and all of you come here to interrogate me. What do you think I am? His servant?”
She continued, “you hear me out, it’s your business to treat him like a master. But you have no right to expect me to do the same.”
“….Miss Alinsky, you know Mr. Melville’s father passed away when he was young. As the only heir, the pressure and burden he bears is beyond our imagination.”

“Beside, let me remind you, Miss Alinsky, isn’t it you who shaped his
current reclusive and disagreeable personality?”
Celeste’s voice turned icy. “What do you mean?”
Cade sneered. “I thought I’m adept at reading people, but for you, my judge
is totally wrong. Now I realize YOU! ARE! THE! MOST! RUTHLESS! ONE!”
Celeste snapped back in anger, “don’t you dare say that again!”
“I’ve held these words in my heart for too long. Anyway, I’ve already pissed you off utterly, and it won’t make much of a difference if I speak them out now,” Cade raised his voice.
“Those who got close to Mr. Melville for money can be easily dismissed. But Miss Alinsky, you’re different. You aimed for his heart… Initially, you willingly poured all your love into him, yet now you withdrew your love freely. That’s why Mr. Melville is afraid of you.”
“He’s afraid of me? What is he afraid of? He’s the one using forceful tactics, and he’s the one constantly pestering me. Is it that no one can ever say no to him?”
“If he’s not afraid of you, why doesn’t he dare to come to you?” questioned.
Cade
Celeste opened her mouth, wanting to retort, but was left speechless. “I have no idea what he’s thinking.”
Cade continued, “I’ve always thought that he was like a machine, never tired, never affected. He has no father, his mother was neglectful, and nobody can truly understand what he’s been through all these years.”

“Of course in your eyes, he is good. You work for him. You don’t have to play.
the sympathy card using his past ordeals. Who hasn’t gone through tough
times? He’s the kind of guy who’s arrogant and domineering. He can’t stand
anything going against his will, because he only cares about himself. His heart.
is even harder than a rock, Nobody can melt it.”
“No, you’re an exception… You found a way into his heart. All these years, you’ve been his fiancée, and besides him, you hold the highest position in this family. It’s just that because you’ve always put yourself low, others have treated you like a pushover.”
“Think bout it. I irritated you, and he didn’t even hesitate to have me working as security for your dad. When Mrs. Quinn mistreated you, he didn’t hesitate to send her away. You don’t have to lift a finger; a simple word from you can get you whatever you want.”
Celeste was so infuriated. “Are you suggesting that I brought all of this upon myself?”
“No, I mean you’ve got a sensitive personality but you love him too humbly.”
In the next moment, Celeste hung up the phone fiercely. She didn’t want to admit it, but Cade’s last words had hit a nerve.
But anyway, it doesn’t mean her love can be trampled on at will.
She picked up her phone and blocked Cade’s number, along with everyone from Melville family.
