On the other side, when Nathan heard that Simon increased the bid by 10 million dollars, he could already tell something was wrong.
“Mother, the other party’s pulling a cut–throat competition. Stop going higher. It’s too dangerous.”
Nathan’s advice came off placid and collected.
After all, Nathan currently reigned the whole Miller Group. Upon hearing Nathan’s dissuasion, Fiona clearly regretted her action.
Even though Miller Group had a fortune to spare, it was indeed luxurious to spend 32 million dollars on a piece of jewelry originally priced at no more than 10 million dollars. Even so, Fiona had already made the call.
In an instant, Caroline expressed her disagreement,
“How could you sing their praises, Nathan? Almost anyone could tell that Simon had made up his mind to please Emilia with the necklace! Why must everything fall into Emilia’s lap? I won’t allow it.”
Caroline’s words struck a chord with Fiona.
Fiona recalled how Emilia had embarrassed her at the banquet earlier that day. It went without saying that Fiona would never let up and lose the auction to Emilia.
“What’s there to be afraid of? I bet that wuss won’t dare go higher!”
In her mind, she would rather spend money than have her dignity trampled on.
Fiona was determined to fetch herself the necklace in that auction. She raised her chin and looked at Simon provocatively.
At that point, Simon, a man who had picked up a sk
wo after acquainting
with Hayden for ages, put on a hesitant visage. He appeared as though he had. deliberated for quite some time before deciding to lift the number tag.
“33 million dollars!”
Against everyone’s anticipations, the calling bid was a mere jump of 1 million dollars.
Listening to the sum announced, Fiona felt all the more prideful. No longer could she conceal the joy on her face.
On the flip side, Nathan, for one, had been dwelling in the business world for decades, hence immediately realizing something amiss. That’s enough. Stop going higher. Let Emilia have it if she’s so keen.”
Caroline, too, noticed the dismay on Simon’s face. Needless to say, she would not cave in. “You’re way too kind for your own good! Listen, you can’t let Emilia have it; even if she does have it, we’ll have to make her cough up several tens of

millions more on it and let Emilia suffer a massive loss!”
All Caroline wished for was to make Emilia suffer. That said, the former herself had yet to be put at a disadvantage before, so she was naturally oblivious to the twists and turns of an auction event.
Despite having stopped the two twice, Nathan did not observe a change in them in restraining their urge. “If you insist on buying this thing, Mother, you’ll have to pay for it with your own money. I won’t be helping you out on this.” His face darkened.
Fiona hesitated when she sensed the anger swelling within Nathan.
“This is amazing! I can’t believe I’m able to take this necklace within my budget, Emilia. I’ll wear it on you myself when the waiter brings it to us later. Such a beautiful necklace must accentuate your tanned skin well!”
Noticing that Fiona had stopped bidding altogether, Simon feigned exhilaration that he almost jumped in joy. As happy as a clam, he looked at Emilia and sneaked a peek at Fiona provocatively while he was at it.
Once that came into sight, Emilia was also not dumb. She instantly understood what Simon was trying to pull, hence having no intention of stopping the man. Instead, she nodded with a smile. “Right.”
The onlookers were in an uproar.
“I didn’t expect it’d be Mr. Ziegler who wins the bid. Who would’ve thought Raysdan Corporation would turn out to be such an affluent contender just as well?”
“Oh, dear… Miller Group’s going to lose. I really didn’t think they’d be beaten like this twice in a day. Mrs. Miller usually looks omnipotent. By the looks of things right now, I guess that’s the best she can do.”
“All hail the charm of a beauty. She’s the gorgeous CF
Saunders Group, after
all. If I were given the chance, I’d also have bought her such a gift, even if it’d cost. me ten times as much money!”
Hearing the conversation in the lobby on the first floor, coupled with Simon’s cheerful look, Fiona immediately had an idea not to grant Emilia her wish. To top that off, it was at that moment when Caroline whispered in Fiona’s ear with hatred, “Look at how that bitch Emilia put a spell on Simon, Mom. If we made them foot the bill with a heap of a fortune and words got out, who’d still have eyes on a wretch like Emilia?”
As if Fiona had lost her mind, she held the number tag high up again.
“40 million dollars! Wait… 40 million dollars? It seems our guests in private room no. 3 are more experienced in this! Will the guests in private room no. 5 follow up for more?”
Nathan purely took a seat behind Fiona. He could care no more about the mother–and–daughter duo digging their own grave.
Renam in Unexpected Ways
The shower of compliments from the crowd had a change of target once more.
“Bravo, Mrs. Miller!”
“If you ask me, only a lady of Mrs. Miller’s stature can pull off a jade necklace like that. A little brat like her from the Saunders family seems a tad too young for it!” “Isn’t it a little too impulsive to buy a jade necklace for 40 million dollars? Let’s see if Mr. Ziegler will continue to raise the bid. He won’t let the lady down, will he?” When everyone’s flattery reached Fiona’s ears, she was all ready to be smug all over again. It was only when she heard the last comment coming from the audience that her line of sight switched to Simon abruptly.
Not only did Simon not appear to be in a dilemma because of Fiona’s bid increase, but he was wearing a strange smirk instead. Seeing that, Fiona became an anxious wreck as her heart skipped a beat.
That time around, she only wanted to create trouble for the other party. She was not truly into landing the necklace herself.
If anything, she had already given up on the notion.
“Is that what you’ve got, Emilia? You have two men with you, yet neither of them could afford to claim a piece of necklace for your sake? Don’t tell me you’ve hit this low after leaving the Miller family?”
Fiona attempted to push Emilia’s button and provoke Simon and the gang. Little did she know that Simon and Emilia had seen through her petty scheme.
Shaking his head with regret was the only thing Simon did next.
“Since you love this necklace so much, Mrs. Miller, we, youngsters, should respect the elderly! Besides, the Group of the Miller family is a big company that has been in the industry for a very long time. We can’t compare to you, let alone afford such a handsome sum of cash to buy a necklac ‘ve no choice but to admit defeat. This treasure belongs to you, Mrs. Mille
Hayden, who had been watching Simon’s behavior on the sidelines all the time, blurted out in his heart, “Good job.”
Emilia could not hold her laughter back at that
excht as she shook her head
helplessly. There was nothing she could do except to really hand it to Simon.
Fiona was so mad that her face contorted. “Y–You!”
She pointed at Simon but was so enraged that she could not find the words to lash out at the man.
It was as if Simon was fanning the flames when he put on a saddened look, shaking his head and covering his eyes. He pretended to be on the verge of breaking down in tears.
“I have no choice but to admit defeat. I might have bent on pleasing the lady, but I just don’t have what it takes to do it. All I can do is let this slide in agony.”
“You! You guys did it on purpose! You all tricked me! This is a cut–throat
Love Returns In Unexpected Ways
competition! You raised the bid on purpose!”
The blockhead Caroline finally came back to her senses, learning that Simon and the rest did all that deliberately. Caroline had taken Emilia to be an easy mark, but never did she foresee herself ending up as one instead.
Be that as it might, the auctioneer would not wait for them to stir up a fuss.
40 million dollars going oncel 40 million dollars going twice! 40 million dollars going again! Sold!”
As the wooden hammer struck, Fiona only felt a thunderous boom exploding in her head.
“Nathan… Nathan! They… They tricked me…”
Fiona groped and turned around, only to feel that her sight was going black, passing out at once.
