Chapter 108
What he knew about the miscarriage back then and what Emilia had told him did not align. Emilia’s sadness did not seem fake, and Fiona did not appear to be lying.
Nathan wondered which part went wrong.
His gaze suddenly darkened, and he felt it was time to rush Shawn’s efficiency. The latter worked too slowly!
Yet, unexplainably, he yearned for the truth yet felt a subtle resistance. If it turned out that the pregnancy was real and the miscarriage was fake, the harm he had done to Emilia…
Adrian’s words echoed in his ear. “Apologize and beg on his knees for repentance!”
Thinking of that, Nathan’s expression darkened terribly.
Seeing Nathan’s inscrutable expression, Adrian could not help but silently scold him in his heart. “He said he didn’t care, he said he didn’t like her? It’s quite obvious he likes her without realizing it!”
As a buddy, he could not watch Nathan take the wrong path. If the latter continued to deceive himself like this, he would regret it the day Emilia really got together with someone else!
He decided to find a way to help them reconcile.
After three rounds of drinks, Nathan picked up his coat and tie from the couch, took his car keys, and headed home.
“I’m leaving!”
The original purpose of that day’s gathering was to accompany Nathan, but now the main guest was leaving, Adrian decided to stay as well.
Nathan had consumed quite a bit of alcohol and was feeling somewhat intoxicated, making it unsafe for him to drive. So, he called for a designated driver.
Ten minutes later, the designated driver arrived.
Without saying a word, he threw the key to the designated driver and got in the back seat. He was a little tired. He unbuttoned the top button of his shirt, rolled down the window for ventilation, leaned against the soft

leather seat, and closed his eyes to rest
“Sir, have you just finished your social engagement?”
The designated driver was a middle–aged man who struck up a conversation with Nathan as he took the driver’s seat. However, Nathan seemed disinterested and responded faintly, “Yeah.”
Seeing that Nathan was not in the mood to talk, the designated driver wast about to drive. At that moment, his phone rang.
The designated driver glanced at his phone, appearing somewhat troubled. He turned to Nathan and said, “I’m sorry, Sir. It’s a call from my wife. May I please answer it?”
Nathan opened his eyes, and his deep, night–like black gaze fixed on the driver. He appeared somewhat displeased but reluctantly allowed the latter to answer the call.
“Hey, Honey, what’s up?” The middle–aged man answered the call, put it
on speakerphone, and a warm smile spread across his kind face. His tone was noticeably more cheerful than before, indicating he was in a good mood.
Nathan inevitably heard the conversation between them since the call. was on speakerphone.
The woman’s voice on the other end of the phone was very gentle. “Darling, when will you reach home?”
The middle–aged man enthusiastically told his wife, “I just picked up a ride, and once I drop off this customer, I’ll head back. You go to bed early and don’t wait up for me.”
The woman responded with a soft acknowledgment and reminded him, “All right. When you’re done, come home early. Be safe on the road, and don’t drive too fast. There’s some soup ready for you in the pot at home. Please have some when you get back. It’s good for your health.”
The woman’s words made Nathan feel a little erratic. Perhaps it was the side effect of the wine, he once again involuntarily recalled the moments he had shared with Emilia in the past.
During their three years of marriage, he often returned home late, sometimes due to unavoidable social obligations but other times simply because he did not want to face her.
Chrener 100-
Yet she seemed to have no idea.
When he reached back late, she would often call him, but he either did not pick up or, if he did, he did not have a pleasant tone.
Once, during a social engagement, the collaboration partner arranged for several bar girls to accompany them.
When Emilia called, a woman was sitting next to him and was about to feed him wine.
Seeing the caller ID, Nathan immediately felt a headache. When he answered the phone, he let the woman who was keeping him company talk to him, even though there was no physical contact. He just wanted to annoy Emilia, make her uncomfortable, and force her to back off.
Emilia heard all the unpleasant words. When it was almost over, he informed her coldly, “I’ll stay at the hotel tonight. I won’t go home.”
There was an obvious silence on the other end of the phone, but after a moment, her gentle voice came through, “Please be careful and drink. less. Otherwise, your stomach may not feel well. I’ll make some soup for you. Which hotel are you staying at tonight? Shall I bring it to you?”
It seemed like she did not mind at all, or perhaps she had not even understood his intention, as she continued to speak to herself.
Nathan tried to recall what he said at that time.
do
“Emilia, do you have no shame? Since you try so hard to please me, you really want me to sleep with you? Don’t waste your scheming. I’ll never love you. My heart belongs to Jessica. Emilia, don’t wait any longer. I’m not the man you imagine, so if you’re sensible, you should divorce me as soon as possible. I never considered you my wife, and I never will in the future.”
He had said too many hurtful words to Emilia, but she was always gentle and patient.
“Nathan, the soup is ready in the pot. It’s your favorite. I’m simmering it on low heat on the stove so you can have it hot no matter when you come back. I’m waiting for you to come home. No matter how late it is, I’ll wait for you. Nathan, I’ll wait for you to forget about her. One day, you’ll see the good side of me. I can wait, no matter how long it takes.”
Nathan pondered how she spent those lonely days and nights waiting all alone.
Nathan was suddenly curious about it but was afraid to know the details.
The words were still fresh in his mind, but there was no longer that person waiting for him at home, and Nathan’s heart felt empty and desolate.
Emilia was still Emilia, but she was not his wife anymore.
In the past, she used to be attentive and caring towards him. Yet, it had. only been a month since their divorce, and she seemed like a totally different person now.
She would not smile at him anymore and would not tell him she could wait again. She now treated him like a stranger or even like an enemy. with whom she could not coexist peacefully.
She would not beg him to stay anymore but desperately pushed him away and let him go to someone else.
Nathan felt irritated and tugged at the corner of his lips. The slight pain on his lips brought him back to reality, but he could not help thinking of the kiss earlier in the afternoon. The pain was the mark she had left, and the memory of her soft lips made his breath quicken.
However, when he thought of Emilia’s resistance and the way she smiled brightly at Simon, Nathan became more annoyed. He felt a sense of frustration surging from the bottom of his heart that tinged the corners. of his eyes with a faint red hue.
Nathan thought, “So what if we’re divorced? Emilia, the days ahead are. long.”
